Communication software is messaging software that is designed to facilitate communication between humans. The most popular types of communication software are email, chat, and instant messaging.

Integration with communication software extends the functionality of talking with humans to communicating with applications. For example, integrating an e-commerce system with instant messaging permits users to participate in real-time auctions inside an IM client. Or, the integration of email with CRM software permits companies to manage marketing campaigns through electronic channels.
